Leanne and Kalen's Spring Wedding at The Woodyard, Norfolk
There’s something rather lovely about a spring wedding in the Norfolk countryside, and Leanne and Kalen’s wedding at The Woodyard, Worstead Estate, was certainly one to remember.
From arriving in a beautiful classic Rolls-Royce to a romantic barn ceremony, relaxed celebrations and a fantastic sparkler send-off, their wedding was filled with laughter, lovely little moments and some absolutely brilliant opportunities for photography.
The weather was typical of late spring in Norfolk, with a mixture of sunshine and cloud. But from a photography point of view, the light was absolutely beautiful. The high cloud created lovely soft, even lighting throughout much of the day, which was perfect for capturing natural portraits without harsh shadows.
As a Norfolk wedding photographer, I particularly enjoy venues that offer plenty of variety, and The Woodyard certainly doesn’t disappoint.
With its beautiful barns, open lawns, countryside surroundings and peaceful lake, there are so many wonderful locations to explore.
And Leanne and Kalen certainly made the most of them!
Bridal Preparations and a Classic Rolls-Royce Arrival
My day began with Leanne and her bridesmaids getting ready for the celebrations ahead.
With five bridesmaids joining her for the wedding, there was plenty happening throughout the morning.
One particularly lovely moment was the arrival of the wedding flowers, beautifully arranged by The Norfolk Floral Studio.
The flowers were absolutely gorgeous and complemented the natural, elegant styling of the wedding perfectly.
I always enjoy photographing the preparations. It’s a lovely opportunity to capture those quieter moments, the little details and the excitement building before the ceremony.
Once everyone was ready, it was time to head towards The Woodyard.
And Leanne certainly arrived in style!
A beautiful classic Rolls-Royce provided the wedding transport, looking fantastic against the countryside surroundings of Worstead Estate.
A Beautiful Wedding Ceremony in The Thatched Barn
Leanne and Kalen had chosen the beautiful Thatched Barn at The Woodyard for their wedding ceremony.
The barn had been wonderfully decorated, with natural greenery lining both sides of the aisle and beautiful floral arrangements creating a focal point at the front.
Warm festoon-style lighting added to the atmosphere, complementing the character of the historic building.
It was a lovely combination of rustic charm and elegant wedding styling.
With five bridesmaids and seven groomsmen, Leanne and Kalen had a fantastic wedding party sharing their special day.
Leanne was accompanied down the aisle, and the ceremony included readings from family members, making it a lovely, personal occasion.
One of the things I particularly enjoy about photographing weddings in The Thatched Barn is the character of the building itself.
The exposed timber beams, brickwork and warm lighting provide a beautiful setting for wedding photographs without needing anything overly complicated.
And with all their family and friends gathered together, it was a wonderful atmosphere to capture.
Confetti, Champagne and Afternoon Celebrations
Following the ceremony, Leanne and Kalen enjoyed a short drive in their classic Rolls-Royce before returning to the main entrance of the barn.
Their guests were ready and waiting for the confetti photographs.
As the couple walked along the flagstone pathway, everyone showered them with colourful dried flower petals.
It was one of those brilliant wedding moments filled with laughter, movement and genuine smiles.
I love photographing confetti because there’s always so much happening in such a short space of time.
You never quite know what expressions you’re going to capture!
Afterwards, everyone gathered to enjoy the afternoon celebrations.
With gin and tonics, champagne, fizz and canapés being served, it was a lovely opportunity for guests to relax and enjoy themselves.
This is often one of my favourite parts of a wedding to photograph.
The formalities of the ceremony are over, everyone is chatting, and there’s plenty of laughter and natural interaction.
It’s the perfect opportunity to capture those lovely candid moments that help tell the story of the day.
Spring Wedding Portraits Around Worstead Estate
One of my absolute favourite parts of Leanne and Kalen’s wedding was taking them for a relaxed walk around the beautiful grounds of Worstead Estate.
We explored several locations, including the lawns, the main estate driveway and the peaceful lake.
And one of my favourite photographs from the entire wedding was actually taken somewhere rather unexpected.
The main driveway!
Now, you probably wouldn’t immediately think of a concrete driveway as a romantic location for wedding photographs.
But sometimes it’s all about looking at a location a little differently.
There was some lovely long grass growing along either side of the driveway, and I thought it could make a beautiful backdrop.
By getting my camera nice and low, I was able to hide the concrete road behind the grass.
The result was a photograph that made it look as though Leanne and Kalen were walking through a beautiful spring meadow.
It’s one of those little photography tricks that I absolutely love.
Sometimes the best locations aren’t necessarily the most obvious ones!
We also spent time photographing the couple on the lawns before heading down towards the lake.
The soft spring light worked beautifully for these photographs.
Although we didn’t have a dramatic golden sunset, the high cloud gave us lovely, even lighting with hardly any harsh shadows.
It’s a good reminder that you certainly don’t need blazing sunshine to capture beautiful wedding portraits.
In fact, slightly overcast conditions can often be absolutely perfect.
And as a little bonus, I even managed to photograph some adorable newborn Highland calves during the day.
They were incredibly cute and fluffy, and made a lovely addition to the photographs from the estate.
It’s not every wedding where you get the opportunity to photograph Highland calves!
Fun Wedding Party Photographs and Plenty of Laughter
After our walk around the grounds, we spent some time photographing Leanne with her bridesmaids and Kalen with his groomsmen.
And these certainly weren’t your typical formal wedding photographs!
We headed back towards the driveway, where everyone was more than happy to have a bit of fun.
There were bouquets being held in the air, plenty of movement, twists, turns and lots of laughter.
I always enjoy photographing wedding parties who are happy to relax and have some fun in front of the camera.
Not every wedding photograph needs to involve standing perfectly still and smiling!
Sometimes the photographs that capture everyone’s personalities are the ones you’ll enjoy looking back on the most.
And Leanne and Kalen’s wedding party certainly didn’t disappoint.g.
Wedding Breakfast and Speeches at The Woodyard
With the afternoon photographs complete, it was time to return to The Woodyard for the wedding breakfast and speeches.
Leanne and Kalen made quite an entrance!
The newlyweds came into the room together, arms raised in celebration and champagne glasses held high.
It was a brilliant moment that really summed up the atmosphere of the day.
Everyone was clearly having a fantastic time.
The speeches followed, bringing a lovely mixture of heartfelt moments, laughter and a few tears.
I always enjoy photographing wedding speeches because they’re such a wonderful opportunity to capture genuine reactions.
Whether it’s someone laughing at a particularly funny story or getting a little emotional during a heartfelt speech, these moments are such an important part of the wedding day.
And there were certainly plenty of lovely reactions to photograph during Leanne and Kalen’s speeches.
Wedding Cake, First Dance and Evening Celebrations
As the celebrations continued into the evening, it was time for the wedding cake.
Leanne and Kalen had a particularly lovely personal touch here, as their wedding cake had been made by a member of the family.
After cutting the cake, it was time for their first dance.
And this certainly wasn’t just a gentle shuffle around the dance floor!
At one point, Kalen lifted Leanne into the air and spun her around in a moment that reminded me of that famous scene from Titanic.
It was such a lovely moment to capture, and a brilliant way to begin the evening celebrations.
Once the first dance was over, the party really got going.
And judging by some of the dance moves, everyone was certainly enjoying themselves!
There was so much energy on the dance floor, with guests throwing themselves into the celebrations.
Some of the dance moves were absolutely hilarious!
I always enjoy photographing this part of the wedding because everyone has completely relaxed, and you never quite know what’s going to happen next.
It’s often during these moments that I capture some of the funniest and most memorable photographs of the entire day.
A Sparkler Send-Off at The Woodyard
To finish the evening, Leanne and Kalen had arranged a sparkler send-off.
Their guests gathered outside with sparklers, creating a wonderful atmosphere and a lovely opportunity for some final wedding photographs.
There’s something magical about photographing sparklers after dark.
The warm light, movement and excitement make for some fantastic photographs, particularly when everyone gets involved.
It was a brilliant way to finish what had been a wonderful spring wedding at The Woodyard.
From the beautiful barn ceremony and colourful confetti to those romantic countryside portraits, the fantastic evening celebrations and the sparkler send-off, Leanne and Kalen’s wedding really did have a little bit of everything.
And those adorable Highland calves were a rather lovely bonus!
Planning a Spring Wedding at The Woodyard?
If you’re considering The Woodyard at Worstead Estate for your own wedding, spring is a beautiful time of year to celebrate.
The surrounding countryside provides some wonderful natural backdrops, and the estate offers plenty of different locations for wedding photographs.
Having photographed weddings here, one thing I particularly love is the variety of settings available.
You have the character of The Thatched Barn, the beautiful lawns, peaceful lakeside surroundings and plenty of lovely little locations in between.
Making the Most of the Spring Light
One thing I really enjoyed about Leanne and Kalen’s wedding was the soft, natural light we had throughout much of the day.
While everyone naturally hopes for sunshine on their wedding day, slightly overcast conditions can actually be fantastic for wedding photography.
Clouds help soften the sunlight, creating more even lighting and reducing harsh shadows.
This means we can often explore more locations without worrying quite so much about the direction of the sun.
For Leanne and Kalen, the conditions were ideal for our relaxed walk around the estate.
Allow Time for Relaxed Couple Photographs
If you’re planning your wedding at The Woodyard, I’d definitely recommend allowing a little time to explore the grounds together.
You don’t need to disappear from your guests for hours.
A short walk around the estate can provide a wonderful variety of photographs while giving you a few quiet moments together.
Sometimes the most beautiful photographs come from the simplest locations.
As Leanne and Kalen discovered, even an ordinary driveway can make a fantastic backdrop when photographed from the right angle!
You can find more information about the venue and its wedding facilities on the official Worstead Estate website.
And if you’d like to see another wedding I’ve photographed here, take a look at Billie and George’s summer wedding at Worstead Estate, where we captured some beautiful golden-hour portraits beside the lake.
