A Beautiful Wedding at Worstead Estate, Norfolk - wedding photography

Some weddings just have that lovely, relaxed atmosphere from the moment you arrive, and Billie and George’s summer wedding at The Woodyard, Worstead Estate, was definitely one of them.

With clear blue skies, a beautiful barn ceremony, plenty of laughter and some absolutely gorgeous golden-hour light, it was a fantastic day to photograph.

Set within the Norfolk countryside, Worstead Estate is a brilliant location for couples looking for something a little different. From the character of the restored barns to the peaceful lakeside surroundings, there are so many opportunities for beautiful, natural wedding photography.

As a Norfolk wedding photographer, I particularly love venues where couples can enjoy their day without spending ages travelling between locations for photographs.

Billie and George’s wedding was a perfect example of how wonderfully everything can come together at Worstead Estate.

Bridal Preparations at Worstead Estate Cottage

My morning started at Estate Cottage, where Billie was getting ready with her bridesmaids.
I always enjoy photographing this part of a wedding. There’s something lovely about capturing those quieter moments before everything gets underway.
While Billie and her bridesmaids were having their makeup done, I spent some time photographing the wedding dress and documenting the morning preparations.
These are often some of my favourite photographs from a wedding. Nothing needs to be overly staged or complicated. It’s simply about capturing the atmosphere and the little details that are such an important part of the day.
Once I’d finished with the girls, I headed over to catch up with George and the boys.
We found a fantastic old tractor shed that made a really interesting backdrop for some photographs. I love finding locations like this. Sometimes the most unexpected places make brilliant settings for wedding portraits.

A Beautiful Wedding Ceremony at The Woodyard

With the preparations complete, it was time for the ceremony.
Billie and George had chosen to get married inside the beautiful Thatched Barn at The Woodyard.
The restored barn has a wonderful combination of exposed timber beams, original brickwork and warm, atmospheric lighting.
It’s a lovely setting for a wedding ceremony, particularly if you’re after something rustic but still elegant.
Outside, the weather couldn’t have been better. We had a proper Norfolk summer’s day, with clear blue skies and sunshine.
The ceremony itself was beautiful, and it was a pleasure to photograph Billie and George surrounded by their family and friends.
Following the ceremony, everyone gathered for the confetti photographs.
Confetti is always one of those moments I look forward to photographing. It’s full of movement, laughter and genuine reactions, which is exactly the sort of thing I love capturing.

Relaxed Wedding Photography Around Worstead Estate

After the confetti, I took Billie and George for a little wander around the grounds to capture some relaxed couple photographs.
One thing I particularly like about photographing weddings at Worstead Estate is the variety of locations available.
You’ve got the character of the historic buildings, the beautiful countryside surroundings and the peaceful lake, all offering something slightly different.
For this first session, I wanted to make the most of the lovely summer daylight while keeping everything relaxed and natural.
I’m a big believer that your wedding photography shouldn’t take you away from your guests for hours.
A short walk, a little gentle direction where needed, and plenty of opportunities for natural moments usually work far better than endless posing.
We also had another photography session planned for later in the evening, when the light would be softer.
And I’m so glad we did!

Courtyard Drinks, Canapés and Plenty of Laughter

Following our first couple photographs, it was time for everyone to relax and enjoy the afternoon.
Guests gathered in the courtyard at The Woodyard, where drinks and canapés were being served.
There was also a live artist creating a drawing of the scene, which was a lovely touch and something a little different.
I love this part of the day because everyone has settled into the celebrations, and there’s always plenty happening to photograph.
We also took the opportunity to capture some group photographs.
Now, group photographs don’t have to be boring!
Billie and George’s friends and family were fantastic, and we ended up with some really fun, energetic photographs.
For me, the best group photographs are the ones where people are enjoying themselves rather than standing rigidly in a line.
The speeches were another highlight of the afternoon.
There were plenty of laughs, and the maid of honour delivered a particularly entertaining speech.
It’s moments like these that make every wedding unique, and they’re always a pleasure to capture.

Golden Hour Wedding Photography by the Lake

One of my absolute favourite parts of Billie and George’s wedding came later in the evening.

As the sun began to get lower in the sky, we headed down towards the lake at Worstead Estate for a second couple photography session.

And the light was absolutely beautiful!

Everything had that warm, golden-orange glow that photographers love.

The lake and surrounding landscape provided a gorgeous setting, and we were able to capture some really lovely, romantic photographs.

If you’re planning a summer wedding at Worstead Estate, I’d definitely recommend allowing a little time for photographs around the lake later in the evening.

Obviously, we’re always at the mercy of the British weather, but when the conditions are right, the results can be incredible.

For Billie and George, the evening light was just perfect.

These were easily some of my favourite photographs from their entire wedding.

First Dance and Evening Celebrations

After our photographs by the lake, it was time to head back for the evening celebrations.
Billie and George took to the dance floor for their first dance before the DJ got the party started.
The atmosphere was brilliant, with everyone enjoying themselves and making the most of the evening.
It’s always lovely to finish photographing a wedding with a lively dance floor, capturing everyone having fun after such a fantastic day.
From the relaxed morning preparations to the beautiful ceremony, the laughter during the speeches and those gorgeous golden-hour portraits, Billie and George’s wedding really did have a little bit of everything.
A wonderful couple, a fantastic setting and a genuinely lovely summer wedding.

Planning Your Wedding at Worstead Estate, Norfolk?

If you’re considering Worstead Estate for your wedding, there are a few things worth thinking about, particularly when it comes to getting the most from your wedding photography.

Having photographed weddings at The Woodyard, I’ve had the opportunity to explore the venue and see how its different spaces work throughout the day.

Here are a few things I’d recommend.

Make Time for Golden Hour Wedding Photographs

One of the standout features of Worstead Estate is its beautiful lakeside setting.

While there are plenty of lovely places for photographs throughout the day, the lake is particularly special during golden hour.

This is the period shortly before sunset when the sunlight becomes softer and warmer.

Rather than scheduling one long photography session, I’d recommend having a short session after your ceremony and another later in the evening.

That’s exactly what we did for Billie and George, and it worked brilliantly.

It meant they could spend plenty of time enjoying their wedding with their guests while still getting some beautiful photographs together.

Take Advantage of The Woodyard’s Different Photography Locations

Worstead Estate offers a fantastic variety of settings for wedding photographs.

The Thatched Barn provides a characterful backdrop, while the courtyard and surrounding grounds are great for capturing guests enjoying themselves.

Then there’s the lake, woodland and open countryside, which offer something completely different.

What I particularly like is being able to create a varied collection of photographs without needing to leave the venue.

For couples who prefer natural, relaxed wedding photography, that’s a real advantage.

Consider the Light Throughout Your Wedding Day

Lighting can make an enormous difference to wedding photographs.

At Worstead Estate, the combination of indoor and outdoor spaces provides plenty of opportunities throughout the day.

The Thatched Barn has a lovely atmosphere for ceremonies, while the outdoor areas are ideal for relaxed photographs when the weather allows.

For summer weddings, I would usually suggest avoiding the harshest midday sunshine for longer couple photography sessions where possible.

Instead, making use of softer light later in the day can produce much more flattering results.

Of course, every wedding is different, and the most important thing is creating a photography timeline that works around your celebrations rather than the other way around.

Why The Woodyard Is Such a Lovely Norfolk Wedding Venue

There’s something really appealing about having so many different spaces available in one location.

The Woodyard combines its restored Thatched Barn with the Mulberry Room, courtyard and beautiful estate grounds.

Couples can also explore different ceremony options, including locations beside the lake and within the Walled Garden.

For anyone considering a countryside wedding in Norfolk, it’s certainly a venue worth visiting.

You can find more information about the venue, accommodation and wedding arrangements directly on the Worstead Estate wedding website.
